Stevenson is American and is of Mexican American heritage. At a very young age, her desire to be active in sports was strong. Gerina began playing golf at the age of 15 years old. Gerina went to Goddard High School. She was the winner of at the New Mexico State Golf Tournament in her high school years. She also had her volleyball skills recognised at a national level. She went to an institution called the University of Texas in 2003. While in her senior years she took home the top prize in every competition which she participated in. During her undergraduate career she was named Conference USA individual champion player of the year as well as UTEP Female Athlete Of The Year.
