Nadia Comaneci, (born November 12th, 1961 Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej [now Onesti(born November 12, 1961 in Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej, now One Romania) Romanian gymnast who was the first gymnast to receive a score of a perfect of 10 points in the Olympic competition. Comaneci was spotted by Bela Karolyi later the Romanian gymnastics coach at the time she was just six years old. Comaneci competed for the first time at the national junior championships, placing 13th. In the following year, she was crowned champion. In her first international competition in 1972 at a pre-Olympic Junior event for countries of the communist bloc she was awarded three gold medals and in 1973 and 1974, she was an the all-around junior champion. Her debut as a senior in 1975, she beat Russian Lyudmila Turkishcheva, the five-time European champ winning four golds and one argent. She took home the American Cup in New York City in 1976 and became the first woman to perform a reverse double salto, which is an unmounting from uneven bars that are parallel. In her early years, Carol began as a figure skater in traveling shows Ice Capades with her sister Nina Wayne. They featured dramatic skating on ice shows.
