In normal circumstances, the individual who is being profiled may have been a major participant in an important occasion or has made an extraordinary statement or proposal which has been recorded. Barbara Heck however left no messages or documents, in fact any evidence of such since the date of her marriage is secondary. There are no primary sources, from which one can reconstruct her motives as well as her actions throughout most of her lifetime. However, she has become an iconic figure in the early years of North American Methodism historical. In this case, the biographical task of the biographer is to establish and account for the myth as well as, if they can, identify the true person who was enshrined into it.

A report by the Methodist historian Abel Stevens wrote in 1866. The progress of Methodism within the United States has now indisputably put the names of Barbara Heck first on the list of women who have been included in the history of the church in the New World. Her record should be mostly attributed to the setting of her precious name made from the history of the great cause with that her memory will be forever associated more so than from the history of her own lives. Barbara Heck, who was unintentionally involved in the formation of Methodism across America as well as Canada, is a woman who's fame is due to the belief that any successful organization or movement will glorify their founding to increase its perception of tradition and continuity.
